What Is A Product Information Management (PIM) System?

Understanding PIM for Multichannel Ecommerce

PIM stands for Product Information Management. It's a software system that helps retailers and brands collaboratively manage their product catalog with efficiency and control. At Zentail, we commonly refer to Product Information Management as Catalog Management.

Why Is Product Information Management Important?

Most businesses that sell products online don't have great product data tailored to the audience of each channel they sell on.

Most retailers and brands manage their product catalog in spreadsheets. Then they upload those spreadsheets to the channels they want to list on. Each spreadsheet is slightly different, and different versions begin floating around the organization...it's a mess. This is a highly inefficient way to manage a product catalog.

A good PIM system allows retailers and brands to collaboratively manage their product catalog, and optimize product listings for each sales channel (own website, Amazon, eBay, Jet.com, etc.) from one central interface.

Not all PIMs are created equal

When selecting a PIM, you need to understand that PIM is a feature, not a standalone solution. Unless you want to patch together multiple solutions for managing your retail operation, we suggest you work with a vendor that offers PIM as well as other critical features like inventory management, pricing management, and the ability to generate and manage product listings.

What sets PIMs apart is their ease of use. It should not feel like you're working in a spreadsheet with hundreds of business rules to configure on a per SKU basis. A great PIM should allow you to easily create variant SKUs (product groups), customize data on a per-channel basis, and not make you repeat tedious configurations for each SKU.
